Smoke And Mirrors Poem by Steven Drake

Smoke And Mirrors

Broken hearts by the sky
Only the brave can survive
Slight of eyes, tempered souls
Wonder nigh of pride
Unmask the disguise
Drop the veil from
Secrets tried
Reveal the self shy of
Mind
Friends where foes
Blister fingerprints.

DNA no cloning here
Bare the truth hurts
To decide
Fire in the attic
Desperate measures
Character alone
Blowing up traditions
In flares of punishment
Rule what world askew
Of bygone days
No sold privileges for pain.

Whisky in the rough
Of cherished dreams
Façade in spades
For drills of cadence
Marching skills
Pay the piper in words
Gone sour to the taste
Of love affairs
Trimesters mesh with
All four seasons
Name your poison.

Tip the scales to balance
Your product
Never lie where white
Applies
Steal your thunder
Where nights arrive
Save the day in flask
Of atmosphere
Sober your judgment
For critical acclaim
See yourself in eyes of safety.

Risk your favors
In depth of principles
Can't straddle the fence
To fall for mistaken
Identity
Be the fool where wisdom
Follows
Take the hand held
Above your shoulders
Wear your face past
Smoke and mirrors.
