Single Mother Poem by Dela Bobobee

Single Mother

Across the street a maiden
her emptiness never forgiven
single motherhood she defies
retrospect’s stabs Helen fumes
while other kids have fathers
her only offspring little Edna
raised alone, fed with disdain
no solace, no companion
angry at God, society, herself
wonders why the fetus lived

giggles of playful glee is Edna
outdoor plays her innocence
while her mother a decree vowed
stone cold her decision made
malevolent mien she hissed
“Thou bundle of reminiscence
thou must not live
thy very essence violates peace
thou must not live
for today thy fate is sealed! ”

Little Edna must die to live
only when there is a father
hatefully was the potion mixed
to overdose the deadly gulp
Edna was summoned indoors
shocked to see tablets strewn
in poisonous array around Helen
her little voice with concern
“Oh Mommy, art thou sick? ”
with childish emotion she whines
“Oh Mommy, my only Mommy
what ails thee?
thou should not sick
for thy little daughter loves thee
thee to tender and forever cater”
with tenderness Edna hugs Helen
gently was the falconer cuddled
and rocked by the little falcon

Sublime emotion flushed hatred
rivulets welling in dilated eyes
a new decree Helen made
“Thou bundle of mistake must live
thou must not die but live! ”
for a new niche hath thou carved
in the midst of icy belated love
my ample bosoms a recess”
with fervent love was Edna strapped
by Helen on her back as she paced
Edna in innocent glee cooed
“I am a baby, I am a baby”

a new husband Helen later found
pomp and pageantry was she wedded
many cycle fruitful years elapsed
but no other offspring had Helen.
