Shortsighted Poem by Mike Smith

Shortsighted

Rating: 5.0

With 20/20 blindness
We stampede headlong into the slew of despair before us
Tomorrows ills are far greater than those of today
And far lesser than those waiting for us on the day after
Careening impetuously
We are the drivers
Ever accelerating
En route to our own undoing
The architects to our demise
Current want trumps future need
Inconvienence now outranks insustainability later
All things in our path
All people whose paths have yet to come
They are forced subjects to our greedy and arrogant decisions
Our unborn children
And their children after them
They are merely termites in the wall
Unseen
And destined to be destroyed
And we
We are the exterminators
And as we sit behind our masks
Our respiratory filters
Protected from the caustic, murderous fumes of our lavish lifestyle
We are wide eyed
Alert to the poisons we're projecting
Witnesses to our self inflicted paralysis
Participants in our eventual extinction

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I fear 'insustainability' is not truly a word... But, as I couldn't find a worthy replacement, it will have to serve the purpose.

population explosion will result to insustainability unless somebody will come up with solution...it must be drastic to abort insustainability.

Couldn't agree more... We're draining this planet of ours for all she has to give.

Within the present scenario, with perhaps every single one of the leaders of the 'major countries' calling Global Warming a myth, we are certainly heading towards a ending.. A very relavant poem Mike.. P: S: I think it is 'unsustainability' that you're looking for ;)

A double thanks. For 1. reading and commenting. 2. Helping me find that elusive word. I was very close. I spent about as much time on that one word as I did with the rest of the poem... And here you've corrected me instantly.
