Shelter Poem by Ashley Bachtel

I keep all of my walls up,
to hide from all the pain.
Because after what I've been through,
I'll never be the same.
I will not ever let you in
because I know that in the end
I'll be broken once again.
My heart has been shattered
One too many times
It'll never be whole again
the pieces I cannot find.
I am my only shelter
the only one that's safe.
There is no such thing as happiness,
or trust or even faith.
This is my only shelter
the one I must defend.
To give up and take chances
only hurts more in the end..
