Shadow Poem by Philip St. Cyr

Shadow

Why must you constantly follow me wherever I go
or seem to be consistently mimicking me
I cannot touch you, hear you, or smell you
but you appear to reside right underneath me,
beside me, or in front of me
why is it that I can't see you in the darkness
but you always appear visible in the light
you desert me in the shade
but are always present in the heat of the day
at night you sometime disappear
but in the morning you reemerge
You are so mysterious...
like a dark reflection of myself
that possesses no characteristics only shape
You have existed as long as I
and only exist if I exist, My shadow
I am your shelter
you are the shade
