Scout - Please Explain

Can't say 'scout',
for 'reject with disdain',
and be understood any more;
or not be asked, 'Please explain? '

From the northern 'skuta', 'a taunt',
it died out.

Couldn't compete (wouldn't share?)
with the 'scout' from the south,
for 'to listen', 'auscultare'.
