If I'd been into rhyme
as my lover slowly died
I would have rhymed
how slowly passes time.
...

I brought back five leaves
from my Gardens walk
to test Richard
stuck in the car:
...

2 actually.

For 2014
I would share the wish
...

Babe is night
And mum is day.
Dawn is day's lullaby
To ease the sense of emptiness
...

6.

That sure sign
that you're dealing with poetry,
o' for 'of',
as in 'a glimpse
...

'Charming, windless days and nights...'
Are what I said I'd like
When winter came and asked.

(I wouldn't give it the smug satisfaction
...

Shelled

But for a contretemps,
the war
...

In a battle between host and hostage,
exponents of humours diverse,
each thought the other a hostage,
that the host had the upper hand
...

It says in the way it sits
It's involved in eternal dreams.
It would say the same, no doubt,
If it pulled itself inside out
...

A fairy is a stretched avatar
tricked up to look tall on stage
by dwarf sets and fantastic architecture,
in this case, low-clipped bushes
...

For their loyalty, economy
and sensitivity to rocks coming their way,
a wise one in raggy togs
trains rats as dogs
...

Before K.M.
told me via his eponymous poem
of the wine fly ghunghuti,
of Hindi words beginning 'gh',
...

Finely tuned
He topped his heights
With extra draughts of nectar.
He could see humour and sorrow in all.
...

Dedicated to poetry
I asked if she would steer me
Rather than row myself.
'Not a lot of demand, ' I said.
...

Whatever we are the soul of
That we can never see.
Whatever we of the soul are
Soul can't see equally.
...

Because they speak in a different tongue,
neighbours are saying in it,
in their front yards,
'We love Australia
...

To ease
the depression
in the growing number
of brains caring
...

A figurehead at
Each line's prow seems fine without
A dot at each aft;
...

Wouldn't you know it:
just after the Third,
when I said to a poet-critic-cricket chum
that the 2017 India-Australia four Test series

Douglas Scotney Comments

Douglas is living up to his title 'Dazzling Hope'. He is broadening his technique to include allusions to well known poets like Coleridge, then offering a linguistic analysis of a stanza. His meaning is becoming more transparent, less opaque.

Doug keeps challenging the reader to work out the meanings of his cryptic, indirect poems. He has humour, irony, all the qualities of an entertaining poet, one who could give readings of his own poems with success.

A prolific poet who is transforming himself in ideas and forms. Not one for the long poem, he keeps to shorter poems that make the reader really think about the meaning. Has a deep knowledge of cricket and writes very good poems about the sport, but not too many. In fact, Doug has a wide and comprehensive number of topics to write about.

Douglas Scotney Quotes

You may feel saved being harmoniously cast but it turns you sarcastic at last

A madeleine-moment clears clouds away; a deja-vu comes out of the blue.

The easier it is to find the answer the more there is you don't know.
