Rootless
A friend of mine says poetry
When written in a foreign language
Is rootless
For only native tongue and culture
Can feed one's speech to make it bloom
And give it fragrance
Well, if it's true, then any poem
Translated into other tongues
Is like a flower cut from the ground
And slowly fading in a vase
A day
A week
And rotten
It will be thrown away
And soon forgotten
So pitiful
No way for me, no chance
To help you hear my voice
To catch your glance...
I think I must invent
Some transcendental language
With roots in our future
Common land

Dont worry. The poet friend of yours was venturing her opinion so you translate and let us worry about interpretation. So when are we expecting a translated poem?
Thank you! I mostly write poetry in English (although it's not my native language) , than translate. I mean I write it in English because I think nobody will translate it from Russian the way I would do.

Thank you for reading and commenting! I want to clarify that he meant writing poetry not in your native language, but in foreign one just to spread it wider. If that language is strange to the poet (he doesn't have any roots in the country where it's spoken, nor have he and at least two previous generation of his ancestors lived there to accept the culture) , he can't use it the way native speakers do, and particularly his poetry in that language is lame.
In a sense he is right. But were he 100% right, it would be very sad. As for me, I think not only blood and culture of the nation can unite people and help them speak one language. There is something deeper in us. Anyway we all have one root, and our branches are tangled now and in the future.
