Requiem Poem by Katherine Delheart

Requiem

Only for a moment, I paused
When your cries interrupted my tragic encore
And its chorus of demons.
Don't try to take me away, my love -
Not until the concert comes to an end.

Your words are nothing amidst the dissonance,
For this is a solo piece, and
It is not for you.
You cannot save me, and the
Darkness in the audience will not
Let me go.
Your teardrops will not quell these demons,
And your passionate words
Will not sever the rope around my neck.

So give me all your darkness and
Wipe away those tears as a
Parting gift, for they do not suit you.
Let them turn to dust with me and
In your place, let me
Become the monster you tried to save me from.

And when it's all said and done,
Will I receive a standing ovation
For a job well done?
Will my sonata be replayed
Or will it be redundant?

I love you, I really do -
Enough to let us end on a good note.
So will you waltz with me as the
Bloodied curtains fall on this bland recital?

Or will you weep in the hall that was empty all along
As the audience absorbs me,
Leaving you with nothing more -
And nothing less-
Than a requiem for the lost?
