Prison Camp Poem by Glen Kappy

Prison Camp

We have seen the pictures—

listless faces
peering through barbed wire

escape attempts
with bodies falling back from shock or bullets.

And maybe worst—
the ever-restless thinking only of another break.

This like existence without God—
a void above and death below—and no hope in leaving.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I suppose there may be happy atheists, but this poem expresses how I felt facing an impersonal universe. My poem "At the Threshold" has more about this.

listless faces peering through barbed wire = a powerful and poignant imagery.

A very sobering poem, Glen. An impersonal universe, and a world in the hands only of man, are scary places indeed. Unfortunately, so many people seem to prefer that to accountability.

hey, laurie! good to see your comment—thank you. yes, this is a sobering one. if you don't know it, stephen crane's poem which begins, " if i should cast off this tattered coat..." which you can find here in ph, is a powerful naked poem that relates to this. -glen
