Power Of Youth - 12th January,2018, Calcutta

Swami Vivekananda famously called upon the young
To arise, awake, forget quest for name and fame,
To plunge in to work for the downtrodden and the poor
And to develop strength and valor to fight the enemy.

Heeding these wise words, two groups of young men
Did arise, awake, forget quest for name, and fame
And did actually plunge in to work - fought with weapons
On the open City streets harming the innocent,
Destroying the reverence and serenity of the very day
On which was born this very Great Man in this very City…

…Their purpose was to settle which group would actually take
The Swami in possession, his sagacity, his legacy -
To ensure the winning group would then be in autocratic control,
Thereby enjoying the copyright of the Swami!

On the same day, an ‘illuminating' article appeared
eulogizing directions Of India's ‘progress', based upon
this Great Man's spiritual teachings!
And listed out the benevolent work being undertaken so prudently
To ensure freedom and development of the poor, especially the women!

The violence and the pen together proved with alacrity and avidity
That both the Indian youth and the Indian politics are resoundingly
Advancing along the right track of 'sanity', 'wisdom' and'sanctity! !

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Violence was created by two rival political organizations to wrest control of Swami Vivekananda, the Great Religious and social reformer in India in the late 19th Century. This is acutely deplorable and dangerous for future - as the Greats like him can not be confined to communities.
