Nobody knows for sure
how old Zeke is.
I can tell you this, though:
He was found near the shore
of Burraston Pond
more than sixteen years ago.

He was thin and gaunt
and of people was afraid.
His eyes were filled with want
and not very much he weighed.

It was not hard to see
he had been mistreated.
His ribs were poking through his skin,
his energy depleted.

My daughter's family took him home
and filled his life with love.
He never more would need to roam;
He was smiled on from above.

He just had surgery on his neck;
a huge lump was removed.
No testing on the lump was done;
lab work was not approved.

If carcinoma's in the cards
Then that's how it will be.
Sixteen is quite old for a dog;
I'm sure you will agree.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
My daughter chose not to have the tumor analyzed to see if it was cancerous. If it were, at his age, they would not do any aggressive treatment anyway.
His hair used to be all black, but now his face is grey or white with age.

A kind heart, Kim, that is what your daughter has got. Rare, very rare, in our time

Yes, sixteen is very old for a dog. How fortunate that he was found and cared for all those years.

I would do the same thing to my dog, Cooper. I will pray he goes to heaven when the time comes
