Ode To Now Poem by Glen Kappy

Ode To Now

Rating: 5.0

Outside there's slanting snow
and bitter cold made worse by cutting winds
and schools are closed—which means no pay for me.

But something stirs me from my window view
to where I am this moment—to where we are
in what we often style "taking stock."

Our roof is holding—as our walls.
There's plenty in our fridge and in our cupboards.
My wife who stays up late is comfortable in bed—
with whom I share a warmth and life
that's weathered many tensions
from the years and lessons in our letting go.

Outside there is no vista—as the future too is hidden.
Will the weather change again tomorrow?
"Things" return to "normal"? There be work for me?
And in the further future—what stresses and what tragedies?
Thinking will not change them—nor will worry—
there is now—and now enough to know, enough for me.

A very personal poem. Thanks for the reminder to “take stock” and appreciate what one has. I’m not the best one for being contented with the present, but I’m working on it.

yes, and i have to work on it too, laurie. as you know, the beauty in nature has the kind of pull to bring us into the present; it's good to renew our exposure to it often. my daily prayer for you and this added right-now wish for your appreciation and contentment. fondly, glen

Outside there is no vista—as the future too is hidden. Lovely expression, in fact this whole last stanza. Really, one must only sing paeans of praise to now.

We needn't worry about what is going to happen tomorrow. If we are happy at the moment, that's enough! A happy home and a supportive life partner are more than enough. The ability to count one's blessings is the best attitude. A beautiful poem exhorting one to enjoy the moment!

Didn’t know the polar weather was so bad even in New Mexico. We are very vulnerable to the weather, and dependent on it, aren’t we? What a mess we’re making of the earth. Good to be grateful for the life we have, and what we have - now. Good poem!

good to see your comment, laurie. yes, we get cold weather being a mile above sea level. the weather's always been erratic here but more so in the last few years. but it looks like we're into spring now, the weather for more than a week in the 60s f. thanks as always for taking the time to read and comment. -glen
