No-Return Policy Poem by Joan Hart

No-Return Policy

What pain for you today –
What pain?
None?
Well, now, that’s not an option.
You can exchange.
Yes, I think a nice trade
Would do you good.
A little change of scenery, eh?
No?
Like I said –
There will always be pain.
It comes in all shapes
And sizes
But it’s always there.
Of course.
Like thought
Or air.
It’s just the way it is.
Here.
Why don’t you try regret?
There.
That’s a nice fit.
You wear it
Beautifully.
See how it lies
Heavily on your shoulders?
Just beautiful,
The weight of it.
Now if that doesn’t suit you,
You can always try grief.
Now that, my dear,
Is some pain.
Although I’m not sure
If it’s your color.
Oh, this self-loathing
Just makes your eyes
Pop.
Brings out the blue.
Stunning.
No?
Oh, I see.
That fear?
Well, it looks like it was just
Made for you.
The perfect fit.
Well, glad we could help!
Come back anytime.
For an exchange, of course.
Like I said,
We have a no-return
Policy.

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

This is an outstanding poem, Caroline, one written with a considerable sense of self-deprecating humor that enhances this fascinating write enormously. It's a most brilliant poetic technique, a style not often seen in a young poet, and combining it with a woman's innate love of shopping was a stroke of poetic genius! Carl.
