My Hero Cowboy

MY HERO COWBOY

Roy Rogers is to our home - town
Like white hats and stars are to the good guys
But to me Roy is my hero cowboy
Always out riding the bad boys
Leaving them in the dust
To save the day, with that I could trust

Roy’s white hat was never dusty
His boots with silver spurs never rusty
Star on his chest he wore like a shield
Riding Trigger in the field

Roy never let me down
Every chance he got he would come back into town
Roy in his inlayed boots never forgot his roots

If it was to dedicate the opening of the new post office in Mc Dermott
Or just an impromptu visit, it would cause such a quest
To find all the local musicians to play there best
His boyhood home is on Duck Run
West on 348 and North on Trigger Pass was the road to follow for a blast

The barn would rock with such sounds, from six strings to steel guitars
The local singer with their twangy accents,
Would sang their hearts out to impress the best
But what I remember the most is Roy sitting on the porch swing, guitar on his lap
Talking to old friends and reminiscing about his past

Called “The King Of Cowboys” for a reason
He had a TV Show we could count on from season to season
When your poor and don’t have a lot in life
His show brought comfort and joy to our life
Proving that even if your born in a small town
Location and roots won’t slow you down
You can always follow your dreams and be what you want
Roy Rogers was proof of that

Roy on that Silver Screen, riding Trigger and following his dreams
Bullet “The Wonder Dog” and Dale on Buttermilk riding by his side
Wearing her fancy buck skin skirts with pride
He made me proud of where I came from and showed me what I could be
Bigger then life they were to me

When days were long and chores were hard
And hunger roared in my belly like a beast
At night when I laid my head down to sleep, comfort came in a simple form
I could here Roy singing, “Happy Trails To You Until We meet Again”

That song was so soothing
Those are words that will never hurt
Even today when life gets ruff
I picture Roy on that porch
And I forget about the bad stuff

So here’s to the cowboy
That fills my heart with joy
My hero cowboy
Roy
