My Cherub Poem by Priyamvada Gaur

My Cherub

Rating: 4.5

MY CHERUB

My lovely Child,
Oh how I despise you!
You with your sweet, puny fear of monsters under your bed
Your childish fear of being swallowed by a giant snake,
Your hateful self indulgent fear of not being beautiful enough for your soul mate,
Your laughable fear of failing in your class…
How I despise you!
For you my dearest loving child
Are so blessed that you don't have the fear
Of the world calling you a Devil when your only mistake was being born a human in a society of cannibals…,
Of failing despite succeeding, being deserving
Of being rejected despite loving unconditionally and truly….
How much I despise you my loving child,
For your fears run away at your mother's gentle hug,
Your father's reassuring voice,
But mine………
My fears don't let me sleep; they don't let me stay awake
They rob me of my innocence…
Plunder my trusting soul….
Suck me into darkness in a street full of people
And make me a ghost of my reflection in the mirror….
Make me smile idiotically when I want to shriek in pain
They make me draw back my hand when offered help
Make my brain dull which once was a vibrant kaleidoscope of curiosity
Makes me bite my tongue refraining it from speaking
Make my eyes full of suspicion which once glowed with love
Happiness
Kindness
Compassion
They make me an object of mockery and ridicule
My dear child
I hate you
I hate your cowardly acts in the face of your pathetic fears
For you are surrounded by hope and love
And warmth of sunshine
While my fears, they are so unrecognizable
Part of such an alternate universe,
Shadows of vast unspoken doom
That not even a minuscule sunray reaches there
And I am nothing but such a breathtaking, glorified, romantic version of dead, decaying, rotten meat
Chewed to the bones
But never dead for the cannibals
My sweet little angel,
What do you know about fears?
They are not those vivid imaginations
They are the ones who either make you a cannibal
Or make you the cannibal's feast
Time and Again
And Again
Till immortality
Till you start seeing only darkness.
But you silly child
You with your spirit
And your deadly courage
Run Away
Run Far Away
Before I kill you
Slither you to pieces
For rekindling the fire inside me
The one which will kill me
Go run to your sunshine filled garden
Back to the sweet lullabies of your mother
Back to your charming monsters under the bed.
My lovely pure angel
Run now
Run fast
And don't look back
Let me writhe in my pain alone
Let me become a cannibal
Go far away my sweetheart
To that distant world where all cherish your laughter
Where all reciprocate your love
Run fast and don't stop
And I'll keep the cannibals at bay from you
My cherub…..
