My Bastion, My Drew Poem by Dean Bottomlley

My Bastion, My Drew

The dawn peeped at the slumbering sea
Gently stroking its sandy comforter.
You are MY security blanket.
I reach for your love when scared.
You smooth my brow to ease fear:
You give me the peaceful sleep I need.

The sea crashed against the towering cliff
Pounding against its chalk stubbornness.
You protect me from the storm.
You stand strong to repel
The ravages of memory from my past.
Making me clean and white again.

The wave strikes the breakwater repeatedly;
Running along the solid barrier.
You are my sea defense.
Behind your love and courage all is still.
I can feel secure and safe
Knowing your love is there to protect.

I know how the sea erodes and wears.
But the tide WILL turn.
I will repair the damage, replace the sand.
There can be no other but you.
Who else could stand the strain;
Who else has felt the pain?

I wish I could protect you from the hurt.
I would shield you from the pain
But you have offered me your love.
Your shoulder on which to cry:
Your arm with which you protect:
Your heart with which you shield.

All I can give to you is my heart, my all,
Damaged I know but yours alone.
When the tide eventually turns;
And peace, once more, lies on the beach,
We can look at battles fought and won;
And see the power of our love, undefeated.

Who else would offer to probe the dark with me?
To share my fears, nightmares, memories?
Once we have walked through deaths dark vale
We then can stride the sunlit peaks:
Knowing we fought the dragons side by side
Armed only with love: - and won! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
