Moses Poem by Whitney Nicole Albright*

Moses

I try to imagine the fear you felt,
The inner reluctance that made you quiver,
As you made your way through the brambles
To put your baby in the river.

As you laid him in his basket,
How broken you must have been.
To set your heart down upon the straw,
Knowing you'd probably never see him again.

How strong your motherly urge,
Must have rebuked against God's plan.
But you showed your faithfulness
And transferred him into his hands.

I bet you collapsed there on your knees
And watched and prayed a while
For there was no greater sacrifice for you
Than that baby floating the Nile.

You didn't know you were instrumental,
That you were sewing seeds.
That the world's greatest prophet
Was floating through the reeds.

In your trepidation,
What was coming wasn't plain.
But this baby you saved would save you.
He'd come to break your chains.

Roll on, river,
Carry him hence.
Roll on, river,
Deliver the prince.
