More Than Just A Garb Poem by Hafsah Temitayo Aminu

More Than Just A Garb

Rating: 3.5

Once upon a time
It was all for salah
Wrapping up only for a period of time
A part-time student of Allah.

"My deen is in my heart" I say
I am modest enough in my jean
No need for religious display
But in my baby steps I began to glean.

This thing that is called hijab
This one that keeps the boys at bay
I realise is more than just a garb
It is what brings tranquillity my way.

The hijab is my shield, my pride
In it I am embraced in the ummah
The ummah of those with a guide
In the community of upholders of sunnah.

Why won't I feel such joy in my heart
When this identity joins me with my folks
We all walking hand in hand on the sirat
Thicker than blood relation this one evokes.

Don't be shy sis, adorn your hijab
I said it is more than just a garb
Tested and trusted to give auto respect
With the caveat your intention is checked.

Deep! Reminds me of Dawud Wharnsby's " The Veil"

The hijab is my shield, my pride I think there is a famous poem with similar lines but your poem has a certain charm in it.
