Mom (The Mirror) Poem by Weldon Davis

Mom (The Mirror)

I close my eyes at times
I see you smile
Truthfully it was the first smile
I ever seen

Whenever times are at their toughest
That memory alone
Cuts through the despair

I breath in fresh air
Remembering your nourishment

I could never do wrong in you eyes
Eyes so much like mine

That when I look in the mirror
I see you at times

Staring back at me
Caring for me
Helping me remain calm
My mom

My mother
Like non other
She used to cradle me
Hold me close
Say to me she loved me
Sweetly

Although we watched T.V.
We mostly bonded from the radio

Old school
We'd laugh together
To the beat and sway
As Otis (Redding) sang
'Dock of the Bay'
Also 'These Arms of Mine'
Yeah
These arms of mine
Miss the embrace of
The woman I love most

No other could take your place
Teaching me faith
Strength in mercy
We might talk for hours
As Percy (Sledge)
Played in the background
'When a Man Loves a Woman'

When a man loves a woman
As much as you
It is never enough
Cause you're beautiful

In this messed up world
You're my constant
My rock
The one I can always depend on

I just reference these songs
Cause mine have yet to be sung
Ha.
Yeah your son is a singer
A singer for the good times
Like Al Green
You are my love and happiness
A queen
In your own right

Every night I say to myself
That I'm blessed to have
A mother such as you

So much you have seen
One sweet day
It'll get better
(We have no where but up to go from here eh?)

Yet even if we move no further toward
Our desires
If we stay stuck in
This moment in time
I know you'll love me for me

That means more to me than
All the riches the masses
May bestow on me
I grew from you
Now you grow from me
We feed off each other like that

I love to make you proud
You call me son
So I shine
Alexander O'Neal
'By My Side'
If I was there tonight
I'd tell you personally my feelings
That this poem shares
Pales in comparison

Yet in still
I was inspired to share this with you

The woman
Who since day one
Has molded me
Shaped me
Into the man I am today

I could never thank you enough
For the way you loved me
As beautiful
As your reflection in the mirror
That is the essence
Of your soul
