Me & Them Poem by Nika McGuin

Me & Them

Rating: 4.0

I want to roll about on the grass
and not wonder, are the neighbors watching me?
I'd like to get in someone's car at night
and not look over my shoulder to see
the neighbors blankly staring back at me
I want to send away unwanted visitors
using a mixture of silence and negligence
rather than overhearing the neighbors say:
'Yeah, she in there'
or 'Mhm...just keep knockin''
or still worse, 'No, she at work,
she'll be back around six'

What I really want
is to live out in the country somewhere
with an immense green field and a towering fence
between me,
and them

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This is an old one from summer, and yes my neighbors really are like that. It's sad but true.

IT'S SAD BUT TRUE. That's the motive behind this poem to express a hard truth to get it out in the open so that it does not gnaw away inside you. The poem has its own solution which is really extremme - withdrawal from the Life of a Neighborhood and living behind a fence. I think this is the AS IF aspect of a poem, that is, you can imagine a crazy idea within the the poem as an emotional release. And the first stanza has wonderful images of provocative behavior which would declare your independence and show those intrusive neighbors what you think of them. B-U-T after the liberation achieved through words and poetry, you must now face the reality of putting up with these people.
