Lucky As Hell Poem by Dennis Murphy

Lucky As Hell

In a dark place where I usually don't go
All alone with no allies all potential foes
I troll through the sharks big fins razored teeth
We meet in the dark night and dance off the street
In the urine filled alley two untrusting devils meet
Under hushed voices we haggle bails for my sweet

Terms not yet met priced too high I look to the light
I think to myself this kids nervous and can't see my stripes
My inner senses tell me still a boy about to prove he's a man
So I stumble into agreement too late steel in hand
Cold and hard pressed tight to my throat
Overzealously trying to show me that He's no joke

Time stops as I argue with the monster in my head
Release me the beast commands or we'll both soon be dead
No I say the boys still too green and unsure
We need that throat to live and breathe somemore
Then the hairs on the nape of my neck upstand
Who's this boy trying to cut his teeth on a man

Back to now He demands my green and gold too
My demon unchained replies sure in my shoe
With a tight grin I fold over my senses abound
He takes a step back I snap up a hit it falls to the ground
A true sergeant in every way His meager jabs can't sway
Dragons released with relish it enters the fray

Two hard blows He slides down face up in the dirt
It turns his face to hamburger as it shows him the hurt
I return panting raid my foes pants as my knuckles burn
Gathering his weapon and wares to the light I turn
Leaving him sputtering dumbed and half dead
I hear that familiar growl inside my head

If it weren't for me where'd you be pray tell
Every time you release me you get lucky as hell
