Lost In Existence Poem by Joan Marques

Lost In Existence

Unforgivable is the sense of purposelessness
That awareness sometimes brings
We come - we go
We do what we think we’re destined for
But who can tell if it really makes sense?
We struggle – we strive
We try to be the best we can be
We learn, observe, elbow, backstab and engage in politics
Only to find that it did not mean anything
In the whole of existence
Other then a momentary sense of achievement
That got pulverized by the retrospective awakening
And the return to the core of being
Who are we? Why are we? What are we doing here?
We’re scraping, building, destroying, reformatting
We discover and invent, and change the status quo
We make progress that leads to regress
And suffer regress that leads to progress
In an unending cycle of living and dying
Uniting, divorcing, laughing and crying
Hopping around with over-inflated ego’s
But really not meaning anything in the whole
A purposeless cohort of searching creatures
Lost in existence.
