Light In Art And Physics Poem by Paul Hartal

Light In Art And Physics

This is a knotty and complex subject
but I will try to make it simple and unadorned.

Light, the visible form
of electromagnetic radiation,
is produced by energy changes
within the atoms of the sun
or in the mediums of the universe.
It allows the world to become observable
with the help of our eyes.

Light, of course, plays
a fundamental role in art.
Its complete absence
in a painting results in aesthetic blackout.

The Impressionist artists made
the exploration of color and light
a central feature of their
painterly investigations and expression.

For physicists light is vibration
in the hyperspace of the fifth dimension.
The fifth dimension is an added feature
to the four dimensions of space and time.
