Life Goes On Poem by Dorothy (Alves) Holmes

Life Goes On

We said good-bye
And yet
My life goes on...
Somehow
I thought it would not
Yet it does...

Somehow the sun still shines
Perhaps not as bright
And stars don't twinkle
Like before...
The sky is not quite so blue
But life goes on.

I even smile - sometimes
When memories steal in
Between other happenings.
New faces have meaning,
And I still lose my keys,
Stub my toe on the rug you never tacked,
Find my check book not balanced at
The months' end
Take in stray puppies
Cry when anyone sings
'The Way We Were'
Pick dasies when strolling in the park
With a new friend...

Yes - life goes on...
Sometimes bitterly, empty!
Are you loving me still?
The constant question companion
Of my heart...
If so - why did we ever part?
But life goes on!
And on!
And on!
