KUMBHAKARNA
- - - - - - - - - - - -
Kumbhakarna the wise and strong giant
slept six months at a stretch-as a penchant
when he woke up he ate
all men, till they satiate
otherwise he was good and would enchant

his brother Ravan was fighting Rama
waking up Kumbha was a big drama
thousand.jumbos, walked over him
to wake him at Ravana's whim
' to.the war arena, no ifs, buts, commas'

Kumbha advised Ravan ' this is not right'
'repent, go and stop this senseless fight'
Ravan refused to.listen
Kumbha couldn't wisen
and bravely fought but felled by Rama's might

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Ramayana is one of the great epics. Rama, the incarnation of God has descended to earth to desroy Ravana, the giant. Ravana had a weakness for Rama's consort Seetha and kidnaps her. Rama wages war on Ravana. Ravana's brother Kumbhakarna was a very strong but wise demon. He had a penchant to sleep for six months at a stretch. Ravana had to use all possible means including a thousand elephants walking over Kumbha to wake him. When he woke up, Ravan ordered him to get ready for war. Kumbha advised his brother to stop war and surrender. Ravana refused to listen. Reluctantly Kumbha entered the war field but waskilled by Rama.

Such mythological characters like Kumbakarna are so very entertaining! I think Rip Van Winkle immortalized by Washington Irving is the counterpart of Kumbhakarna! However you have revived in me the epic tale of Ramayana! Interesting poem!
