Je vis haut élevé sur colonnes d'ivoire


Je vis haut élevé sur colonnes d'ivoire,
Dont les bases étaient du plus riche métal,
A chapiteaux d'albâtre et frises de cristal,
Le double front d'un arc dressé pour la mémoire.

A chaque face était portraite une victoire,
Portant ailes au dos, avec habit nymphal,
Et haut assise y fut sur un char triomphal
Des empereurs romains la plus antique gloire.

L'ouvrage ne montrait un artifice humain,
ais semblait être fait de cette propre main
Qui forge en aiguisant la paternelle foudre.

Las, je ne veux plus voir rien de beau sous les cieux,
Puisqu'un oeuvre si beau j'ai vu devant mes yeux
D'une soudaine chute être réduit en poudre.
