Isn't Anymore. Poem by John Howard Davies

Isn't Anymore.

ISN'T ANYMORE
by John Howard Davies 18th. January 2017

As past becomes the pictures
that we keep inside our heads
we all play the game and smile a lot
in front of tears we shed
the memories and dreams we've lost
stay hanging in mid air
it frightens us on many days
to think we might not care

Behind our smiles we trudge the miles
laid out from a distant past
that continues because we let it live
and sometimes we let it last
but comes the time when we can't bear
to think out anymore
what may have been and was it seems
isn't anymore

Crisscross roads others loads
to carry on our own long road
leading to a better sunset
where smaller lies aren't quite told yet
mouths are closed and thunders gone
within this sweet and untouched song
resin stays from darker days
where sometimes we think we belong

I'll listen to your harmful whispers
tread carefully in your deadened Christmas
until such time as our love fits us
and we can burst those swelling blisters

Then past can take a place gone by
and sometimes we can freely cry
for lost love broken hearts and biscuits
if deep thrust thoughts will let us risk it

You come here and I'll go there
we can win if we can share
the time grows smaller by the day
as chances like this fade away.
