Is This The American Dream? Poem by Evelyn Macdonald

Is This The American Dream?

We move once more in the dead of night
load up the car, drive out of sight
ever mindful the neighbors might
call the landlord & exploit our plight

Always onward to somewhere new
and all because the rent is due
where we will go, we leave no clue
ever moving so they cannot sue

It's been this way for many years
I'm barely able to hide the tears
the family must not see my fears
or the silent scream that no-one hears

The jobs have gone now, one by one
outsourced they say to those with none
a political godsend, yes, for some
but my road to hell has just begun

What happened to this land o' free
of glory, hope, Lady Liberty
does no-one give a damn but me
open your eyes America, and see
