I Wish It Were Midnight Poem by Dorothy (Alves) Holmes

I Wish It Were Midnight

Rating: 4.0

10: 30 p.m.
And I wish it were
Midnight
And this day had already
Ended
And tomorrow we
Could start anew...
But, what would be different?
You'd still be you
And I'd be me and
I'd be here and
You'd be there
And we'd still be
Pretending that it is okay
For us to be in these separate
Places with other people
Crowding in on us
And we'd interact as though its
Absolutely all right...
At least I do...
But then you are so clever
And no one would ever guess
Your world is upside down
Sometimes when I am not
There...
God forbid anyone should guess.
But didn't I write this before
Under a different title but
With the same forlorn melody
Like in some Sinatra song'
Which is what my heart sings
Whenever we are apart and
You explain to someone else
Why you are alone, never
Mentioning me...but
Then, of course I am your forbidden lover,
And the world must never know,
For your benefit and mine.
So we continue on different paths,
Filled with twist and turns without
Benefit of detour signs to make it easier
And we move on blinded by the depth
Of our love for each other and
I hear the longing in your voice
That calls to me in whispers of love.
