I Became A Name Poem by Stephen Kekeghe

I Became A Name

Master, if yesterday was dead,
I could still remember how I folded my knees
On the mocking face of the sand
To wash your filthy feet

My devotion dwarfed me,
It stripped of my inner ego
And I became a name!

I was a flying reproach
Trying to perch on your roofs of hope
I was the mudskipper that hops for fish
Along the sink-sand of the river bank
I was the river bird that has no life
Without the bounties of the river

I became the ugliest of names!
I was the flaming plot to ruin your life
The famous traitor that abducted your eye

I killed you from my inside
And I became a name of strong feet
Strong soul, strong mind
I'm a living name
Living within ME
The only master I know!
