I Am Not Important Poem by Shalom Freedman

I Am Not Important

I am not important
I am not important
To the future of the cosmos
I am not important
To the future of humanity
I am not important to the future of the Jewish people
I am not important to the future of Israel
I am not important to the future of the United States and the free world
I am not important to the major changes to humanity in my own lifetime
I am not important to the present or past or future of literature
I am not important to the poetic tradition
I am not important much of what I care about
I am not important to much which will affect my own personal future
I am not important to what there will be in my own city tomorrow
I am not important to most of the people who I know and who know me
I am not important to the city I was born in or the city I have lived in for most of my life
I am not important to the next generation of humanity
I am not important to almost everything and everyone I can think of
I am not important
And my great sense of self-importance only shows me
What a not-important ordinary and foolish human being I am.
