Hide & Seek Poem by Gabriella Hart

Hide & Seek

Why is the house so silent?
Why is the garden so still?
Here i wander along the paths
with my nose pressed up against the window sill.

The curtains have long been closed,
but people still peer in.
But they never seem to see me, hear me,
are my whispers that paper thin?

Where are my mother and father?
i wait for them each night,
but they never seem to come for me,
it gives me such a fright.

It all started when my friend and i,
polly was her name.
She was the one who insisted
on playing that silly game.

She was the one who counted
i was the one who hid.
I hid in the cupboard in the basement
not realising the doors were so stiff.

Time seemed to stand still,
the air was getting thin.
I pushed against the doors,
but realised i was stuck in.

I screamed out polly's name
but still she didnt come.
I heard a little giggle
i wandered where it came from.

''Polly, i need you to help me.
I need you to get me out.''

Polly replied,
''Im afraid this game is over now.
Time is out.''

My cries went unanswered,
my breathing came to a halt.
as i closed my eyes
and succumbed to the darkness without a fault.

Slowly my eyes opened
and i was standing in grass.
I began to call my parents,
but alas'.

The wind blew an old newspaper
and on the front it read:
Girl found dead in basement
thats what the police had said.

But as she looked up in horror
she heard a quiet call,
''Come and play hide and seek with me,
once more.''

I turned around and saw
the girl who made me howl in pain.
And now im stuck repeating
the same old silly game.
