Helpless Sister Poem by Imthiyaz Khan

Helpless Sister

Help me...
Help me take the term
'Sister in law'
Lawful or lawless.
Then my brother to me
Half or nil?

I thought and was taught:
After parents, they fill the gap!

Help me...
Help me have the clue
To draw water from a well,
Sans rope, sans pitcher!
I can only draw tears!

Help me...
Help me adopt the way
To pile up scattered grains
on a boulder at the Summer noon,
Sans dustpan, sans broom!
I can only air out my soul!

I must comply with
I must comply with
as these are her commands!

My brother is
No more helpful
Than my entombed parents!

Help me...
Help me realize if
I am a fish or
A modern girl!
Get me acquainted
With my legal rights!

I find this such an interesting write. It wasn't until after losing both of my parents that I truly came to understand how very important my three sisters and brother-in-laws are to me. It brought home the realization that without them I truly would feel alone in this great big world. This poem is a nice reminder for me how blessed I am to have them in my life.
