Heart For Heart. Poem by Jessica Lindsey

Heart For Heart.

Rating: 5.0

I gave away my heart
And was surprised when I found,
Later on that night
My heart trampled on the ground.

I gathered up the pieces
But couldn't find them all
Some had been scattered by the breeze
And some were just too small.

I brushed them off and turned around
And bumped into a boy,
I put the pieces in his outstretched hand,
He accepted them with joy.

He got out his crazy glue
And his wood burning kit
This puzzle was missing a few
But he made it look like they fit.

He left my heart outside my door
Then away did he run,
Deciding that I was a bore
And he needed more fun.

Next came a guy from down the street
With his beguiling smile,
He said nice things and acted sweet
But wanted one thing all the while.

As if it had never happened,
I was once again surprised
To find my heart torn open
Realizing he had lied.

This time I didn't try
To pick the pieces off the ground,
I just gave a little sigh
Knowing they'd never all be found

My little sigh was heard
By someone I didn't see,
He spoke not a word
As I cried face 'gainst my knee.

He knelt down on the street
And once he had begun
He didn't rise to his feet
'til he had gathered every one.

His fingers found the pattern,
Soon each piece was back in place
The little heart was tattered
So he tied it with some lace.

It was now that I so chanced
To lift my tear-stained face
My shattered heart had vanished
But another stood in its place.

I knew not what to think
When from the corner of my eye
I saw him give a little wink
And I cried out in surprise.

His hands were out of sight
And he gave a little grin
Said, 'I've been working hard all night
On a heart I intend to win.'

Then from behind his back
He drew the shabby little thing,
In one place there was a crack
Held together by a string.

I said, 'It isn't much, '
He pressed his finger to my lips,
And whispered, 'Baby, hush,
It's more than I could ever wish.'

I gave a little cry
For finally I'd learned
How good it feels to give away your heart
When in its place, a heart's returned.
