Harvest Time Poem by Francois GUIMATSIA

Harvest Time

When shall we reap the fruits of our labor,
In fair return for our sweat and endeavor?

After obtaining a hollow independence,
Just in name and never in substance!

After contributing to fighting Nazism,
Which paved the way for a new humanism!

After conferring on the New World entity
Its unique and deeply hybrid identity!

After the link, widely admitted today,
Between the local and the global, in a way!

When our continent can attract investors
And even mobilize giant economic operators!

When hungry babies today cry for food,
And sad parents cannot feed the brood!

When the West accepts interdependence,
And tempers its attitude of arrogance!

When shall we reap the fruits of our labor,
In fair return for our sweat and endeavor?

When shall the continent of Africa get its fair share in the world's economic system, or at least get just the respect and attention it deserves?
