Gypsy Queen Poem by Alejandro Torres

Gypsy Queen

She was a witch
A divine creature of yore
She had seen the birth of the earth
And the fall of mankind
She was a gypsy walking the line
Between two worlds
From a time when Portugal
Was just coming out of its shell
And Spain was young
But even then I loved her
She played in the fields
With honey sweet hair
Flowing freely
Between gusts of wind
And beats of my heart

I was just another fool
Madly in love with the Gypsy Queen
But even my Spanish armor plating
Couldn’t stop this heart from palpitating
For her only
Traveling the seas her melody haunted me
The waves moved like her hips
In the fields
The sun shone like her eyes
When she smiled
And I knew I would never love
Another

The wind carried fallen feathers
From her wings
And they reminded me of her hands
High in the air
Twisting intricate patterns into the sky
Twirling intricate patterns
Into my heart
That only she would know
And I knew
There would never be a soul
Who could calm me
Like that gypsy

When I came back
I would often find myself in her fields
The gentle breeze that only blew for her
Sweeping the sweat from my face
And foolishly I still wore that armor
That stood no chance against her
And sunset would come
But she would be no where
And that line was so daunting
Laughing and haunting
Like she intended

But I put on my helmet and crossed to her
Her young Portugal
Had a conquistador in its midst
And I knew I’d love her better
Than all the other marineros
And I spent a lifetime walking the line
Looking for that honey haired beauty
Who could withstand time
And the destruction of my heart
Sailing from battle to battle
The wind was there
To hold my hand

And I walked on water
When I smelled her sweet perfume
Deep and abiding
Like promises whispered in the night
When our bodies danced in the fields
Flowing and surging like the tides
And I survived days in the desert
Drinking from the thoughts
Of her that played in my mind
That Gypsy was a mantra
The wind carried to me
On feathers from her wings
From gusts from the beats
Of her heart

And I knew when I found her again
I would never love
Another
