For What Poem by charles carrelli

For What

Deep into the hole the rabbit went, so I followed with all my discontent.
I crawled into the darkness with no light, darker than the dark of night.
Through the soil into the earth, all the way down to the walls that birth.
This rabbit I swore I would find him this night.
His paw prints at my fingers tips, he would not get away,
not this night, not in any way.
His heart I started to compare to the silence in the air.
Thump thump, thump thump, thump thump in my ear,
closer, closer I grew near.
I could hear him hopping, I could feel his fear.
But why was it I chased him hear?
