For David (A Lament Of Love) Poem by Smoky Hoss

For David (A Lament Of Love)

I call you, and you answer, but
really, are we there?
I have no words
to ask the questions
I need to know; and you
have no words
to give the answers
that you have no way of knowing -
The silence in the line speaks
for us both; but
still, it is words we long for.
Only words
can reach like arms
through the distance of separation;
those words of love,
the only true eradication
of time and space -
Every thing else
seems so small, insignificant...
unworthy even.
Here, in this little conversation,
the phone has become Holy-Ground.
So, we simply say: 'I love you.'
It is enough.
The Spirit has passed between us.
In this Sacred-Silence
we know all we need to know,
for now.
