Don't Try But Do Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Don't Try But Do

Don't try.
But do say 'Thank You'.
If for no other reason,
But to express a gratefulness.
For tolerating to have the patience,
To smile instead of balling a fist.
Wanting to swing at someone to hit.
Or a wall to punch a hole in it,
Later to discover expensive to fix.
And a knuckle broken.
Explaining the pain,
To a doctor at a hospital visit.

Don't try.
But do say 'Thank You'.
Take just a few moments.
Before each day begins to start.
Knowing few will value,
The love you would rather...
Express than to let,
Someone on a mission wishing to test...
Just how much love you've got.

Don't try.
But do say 'Thank You'.
Even if this keeps,
Anyone from showing...
On your nerves they are stirring up heat.
Smile.
Show teeth.
And hopefully with them shown,
Someone who agitates...
Will take this as a sign,
You would rather have them leave you alone!

And...
If this doesn't do the trick.
Show them the cast you have on your fist!
