Dolly Poem by Ellen Ni Bheachain

Dolly

She was a pretty little Girl,
One with many friends to played with,
Till all that was new,
Became tattered and torn,
And the pretty little girl,
Simply faded away,

When young and pretty,
Dolly was misused and abused,
Evil predators had their way,
And took her away,
She was thrown here and there,
Still, she became battered and torn,

Dolly got too big and was tossed aside,
Left alone Dolly thought what would she do?
Far from home,
Yet, so young in age,
Left alone and frightened
In a rundown area,
Unknown to Dolly,
With no food or shelter
No safe place to sleep,
In a city and country unknown to her,
A foreign nation and so far from home,

Dolly walked the streets,
Till her legs grew tired and her belly ached,
An elderly lady smiled,
Dolly said hello and asked for help,
The elderly lady took her by the hand,
And brought her to the police station,
They placed a blanket around Dolly,
And she knew she had found a safe haven,
And soon home she did return,
Yet, that feeling of been broken,
Stayed with Dolly as she grew,

Then on her travels Dolly did see,
The other places to live,
Been young and free,
She forgot for a while,
Shook off the blues,
Found the newfoundland,
Of the young and the free,

So, Soar Big Eagle,
But not in arms,
With economics,
And helping hands,
Seek and find what is yours,
And set them free,
So, Dolly and the others,
Can just Simply Be.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
We have come a long way from the 1950's,1960's and 1970's where child exploitation was not addressed as it is today. Many children grew up with the abuse not been addressed or justice served. They grew up into men and women who many never received counselling or protection from their abusers. In the United States the " Megan Law" was passed that not only paved the way for protection children but then was adapted by other countries to where we have a proper justice system in place for children today. For all the children of the 50's,60's & 70's that kept it inside and ending when they grew up having to move away and start again in unknown places.E-NíB.
