Dear Life Poem by Mark E Webster

Dear Life

Dear Life

This flimsy sheet lies heavy on my skin.
Much laboured is
My breathing out
And breathing in.
It won't be long
Before I slip away.
All my life
I've waited for this day.
And now before me passes frame by frame,
A litany of vices to my name.
The promises I made
But did not keep.
The abuses and the shame
For which I weep.
But in amongst these errors
Lay some grace.
Sweet memories which bring a smile upon my face.

I've walked among the mountains
Oh so high.
Marvelled at the stars up in the sky.
Walked hand in hand with lovers on the shore.
Wallowed in wet kisses and much more.
All in all the good outweighs the bad.
I should be grateful for the four score years I've had.
And yet, I so bemoan the time I spent
In anxiousness, fear and discontent.
Worry and regret have left their mark.
But neither sheds much light here in the dark

The pulse that raced with passion is now slowing.
I close my eyes, my heart begins to slow.
The time has come and now I must be going
Into what or where I do not know.

These final words are all that's left of me.
From this dear life I am, at last, set free.
