Deacon John Poem by Randy McClave

Deacon John

Deacon John is the church's deacon
A light in the church's beacon,
The man that many Christians look upon
From day one.
He reads and teaches the word of God
To him everyone will smile and agree and nod,
From his Biblical preaching
And unto his Sunday school teaching.
He preaches how he loves and how he follows Jesus
Also how the Lord Jesus will free us,
And how we must be kind and loving to each other
And how in the eyes of God we are each other's sister or brother.
He taught us all the golden rule
And how we all are the Lord God's tool
But, he said the closer that we get to the Lord
The quicker Satan will be to pull out his sword.
Then deacon John got very angry and very mad
When he did of course Satan is very glad,
Deacon John had forgotten a sick person's name
And of course someone else is to blame.
Then his soul and his facial expression had changed
As though being possessed and deranged,
A madness upon his soul he will then bring
When Satan had pulled and tugged on his string.
He had forgotten a simple thought
The name that he was told and now he had sought,
Then when the worried parishioners looked upon him
They no more saw a heavenly Christian gem.
Then he remembered the name that he had forgotten
I wonder if now, if he feels rotten,
Did he lose hope and all that was concerned
When that name unto him, God had returned.
He then wrote that name on the prayer board
Wanting that person with others to be healed by the Lord,
And as he led the church's congregation for the sick in a prayer
I instead prayed for the man, standing right there.
