You taught me how to tie my shoes
And that the world was round and vast
You taught me how to throw a ball
And to learn from troubled past

You taught me how to swing a bat
And how to cast a fishing pole
You taught me how to ride a bike
And always work to reach a goal

You’re there for every football game
And cheer with me when teams we beat
You’re there in even the darkest times
And held me through the worst defeat

You’re there to talk both day and night
And you’re always kind and nice
You’re there to teach when I do wrong
And always give the best advice

You showed me books and made me smile
And smiled back when I would read
You showed me not to hit a girl
And not to be consumed by greed

You showed me how to hold the cone
And lick it so it wouldn’t drip
You showed me how to swing a club
And always get the perfect grip

You told me not to lie or cheat
And with my siblings not to fight
You told me why the sky was blue
And always kiss my mom goodnight

You told me that I can’t give up
And find the light when black I see
You told me try and try again
And effort’s all you ask of me

Dad, because of you I am
A better person through and through
I cannot express in words
The respect I have for you

So my simple wish is this
In every form in every way
My hope is that I could become
Half the man you are today
