Cold Winds Of Winter Poem by Roy Johnson

Cold Winds Of Winter

As the cold winds of winter whistle down the old stone chimney of life
the rain turns to sleet, the sleet turns to snow
and the dark nights grow longer and longer,
The firewood is stacked beside the house and
The cellar is stocked with preserve jars of corn and peas,
carrots and beans
and the potatoes are growing in a warm dry corner.

The radio is set for an evening’s entertainment with Ozzie and Harriet, Edgar Bergan and Charlie McCarthy,
Jack Benny, the Hallmark Theater
And The Shadow
and earlier, in the afternoon, there was
The Lone Ranger, Sky King, Sergeant Preston of the Yukon.

and then, after all that, and dinner was had and the evening is done,
the warming pan and the dreams will keep the bed warm for the night.
That was then

and Now

The pantry and fridge are filled with goods from the deli,
The cellar is stocked with a decent red,
The satellite TV is set for the movie channel
and the central heating is on 21 deg.
