Choked By Chords Of Pained Insistence

I drift in dreams of lucid song
voices sounding in the distance,
paused notes rise aggregate and long
choked by chords of pained insistence.

Refrains pulsed somber with regrets
heaving sighs in the wake of morn
each bar then measured for effect
above the dismal pall of dawn.
