Change... Poem by jacqui fleming

Change...

Out,
Out in the wide open plain,
The wind rushes through the water filled grass,
Up and over it sores,
Till it ripples through the river,
Pulsing through the plain giving life the all in its path,
Everything’s still and quiet,
In the distance a faint beating comes,
Louder and louder,
The small delicate wings of a butterfly,
Beats come closer,
The paper thin wings pierce through the silence.

Her graceful beats sing a melody,
Telling a story of her own,
The swishing of the grass joins in her rejoicing for all else matters not.

Atop a mossy rock,
She perches sunning her luminous wings,
For they have not been free before.

Breaking nature’s melody, comes the squeals of delight from a little girl,
Running through the open meadow,
Her coppery curls flying behind her,

She laughs in delight as the wind pushes against her,
She rushes to the cool mountain river.
Silvery pearls of laugher escapes from her as the ice cold water hits her legs,
She splashes and laughs again as beads of water go flying.

Intrigued the butterfly launches herself into the air and sore higher,
As she does so, the little girl notices,
She squeals again and rushes at the delicate insect,
Cupping her hands all the while.

The wind stops blowing as it witnesses the sight,
The grass grows silent as it too watches.

Her lips turn into a pout,
As she understands she can’t contain this graceful insect.
She leaps over to the moss covered rock and she too sits on it,
And shut’s her eyes and takes in all of natures wonders.

The delicate beats sound again,
As the butterfly hovers over to the girl and perches on her shoulder,
One eye opens and the girl’s lips turn onto a triumphant smile.

Again, sound pierces’ through nature’s silence,
The girl’s mother shouts from over the hill,
Calling her home.

The girl sighs in defeat as she realises this moment won’t last,
Both human and creature are reluctant to move.

As the girls thudding footsteps fade the butterfly’s beat now mourn for the loss,
And so do the wind and the grass mourn in the perfect harmony that is now lost….
