Chance Poem by Branton Wilcox

Chance

If I could put all of my thoughts onto a canvas,
I would be an artist.
If I could say every good thing about you,
I would have a short story.
If I could express my emotions clearly,
I might be dreaming.
If all I had to say was heard,
I would be acknowledged.

However, that's not the case with me.
All I've ever wanted to do is fit in,
But everything is too hard when you're scared of what people would think.
All I could ever dream of is right in front of me,
But I'm too scared to take action.
You have been my dream since I was 11,
Back then when the only problem was if we're having recess.

In the face of my dream, I turn to fear,
Instead of approaching, I turn away.
In the midst of everything I've ever hoped for, I cower behind the sheets.
I am too afraid of your opinion of me not because of who I am now,
But because of who I have been before.

Now we've both gone seperate ways since High School,
But you've still been my only thought.
I only hope to run into you again,
So I can attempt to say all that was never spoken.
Truth is, I've barely survived without seeing you everyday in the halls,
Briefly brushing against your shoulder as we pass,
Smelling your sweet perfume across the class floor,
I only wish I got to tell you all of this before it was too late.

But I guess that's what happens when you miss your chance,
You never get to see what would really happen.
