Book Lover Poem by Paula Glynn

Book Lover

I love books and read everyday,
I enjoy romance, crime and chick lit,
I like a story with grit,
And I have a wide variety of tastes,
And those books I receive at Christmas,
Are just the icing on the cake,
For books are filled with imagination and people,
And documents history all over the world,
For Anne Frank may have been just a girl,
But her story has rocked and touched the world,
With its simplicity, yet emotion,
Her story as deep and meaningful as the ocean,
And I do like stories from the war torn Middle East,
For those countries are in trouble,
Yet people still go there to help,
And the governments should be doing their best,
But like the rest, a lot of people just want to forget,
And soldiers do a job they don't want to regret,
Still, the Middle East is on the news every night,
And snippets are in a lot of books that I read,
Thoughts being planted like a seed.

I love romance stories, for they are heartfelt,
And passionate, with characters from every time,
The romance of the story like lace, so delicate and fine,
A lot of stories are set in the Victorian age,
Where women of wealth would hope to marry above themselves,
Hoping to attract a handsome man,
And turn the page,
To make all their dreams come true,
And leave them living in material wealth,
And having the utmost of health,
Where their mothers dressed them up for a wedding,
A white dress and veil upon their face,
To join together with the man of their dreams,
Knowing they will be happy as they walk down the isle,
Then I put down my book and sigh:
I enjoyed the love story,
And am glad they lived happily ever after,
For it took 200 pages to capture my imagination,
And now I feel as if I could be that person,
And feel their happy laughter.

Then there is the horror novel:
Spooky and often bloody,
It is like a nightmare written in blood,
As the main character sees a skinless corpse,
And screams in terror,
The realises that she is being chased,
By a madman with an axe,
But I know the end of the story,
For the main character will recover,
As she turns the tables and the man hurts himself,
Because he wasn't careful not to cut his hands,
And he dies in the story having not see the master plan,
For he had been sent by her husband,
Who turns out to want all her money,
Yet she never realises this throughout the whole novel,
As her twisted husband was never sweet like honey.

After this comes the crime book:
And the cover is worth a look,
A Satanic worshipper decides to kill a few women,
And his fellow gangsters deal drugs,
And a detective has to inflitrate this web of deceit,
And he does this through secret agents,
Until all the clues and evidence are pieced together,
The pieces of the puzzle not taking forever,
For it takes 400 pages for the detective to find all the answers,
But I do feel stories of this nature are quite realistic,
And have deeper levels in the plot,
For all these genres are fascinating and I enjoy reading them,
For people, places and situations are diverse.
And every book with its own story,
Tells of past, present and future,
And always packs a punch,
As character after character adds personality and action,
To each and every scene,
And reading a book is better than watching a film,
For these books are sometimes better than any movie scene,
The plot running like a - sometimes - twisted dream,
For books are aesthetically pleasing,
Their twists and plots strangely teasing,
For I am addicted to reading,
And I am a book lover, through and through.
