Better Man On Earth Poem by Sherri Vogel

Better Man On Earth

You could have wrote a letter
Taken time to call
You've been in town a few times
But never tried at all.
You're overseas at war now
Fighting in Iraq
I pray to God up above
Someday he'll bring you back.
When you left you were unhappy
So I guess you chose to sign
The U.S. Army Contract
On the dotted line.
You became a soldier
Thought you'd move away
Leave all your problems in the dust
So how's your life today?
Are they keeping you real busy
Are you living with regret
Does being far away from home help you to forget?
All the people that you lied to
And treated just like dirt
Will you ever say your sorry
To everyone you hurt?
Do you miss that little boy of yours
This year he'll be three
Growing up without a dad
How sad that would be.
He's the little miracle
That came onto this earth
From an alcoholic father
And the fool who gave birth.
Guess rushing in relationships
Changes destiny and fate
Too bad you did not stop to think
Should we proceed or wait.
You were not even married
Hardly even knew
The girl you chose to sleep with
But I guess that's just you.
Hopefully one day
God brings you back again
Maybe you'll apologize
Be on your way and then.
Go and be a father
To that boy you helped create
He'll only be a six year old
Still wouldn't be too late.
Teach him everything you learned
While you were away
Like honor, pride, and dignity,
And values everyday.
Hope the Army finally taught you
Everything your worth
So you can teach him how to be a
'Better Man on Earth.'
